What the marriage visa gives you
The Non-Immigrant O (Marriage) — sometimes called the spouse visa — is a 1-year extension of stay granted to the foreign spouse of a Thai national. Unlike the retirement visa it includes the right to apply for a work permit while inside Thailand, which is its biggest practical advantage.
It is renewed every 12 months on the same financial test, and after 3 consecutive years on a marriage extension you become eligible to apply for permanent residency.
Financial requirements
You qualify on one of two paths:
- 400,000 THB seasoned in a Thai bank account in the foreign spouse's sole name for 2 months before the first extension and 3 months before each renewal.
- 40,000 THB / month verifiable foreign income, evidenced by an embassy income letter or 12 months of Thai bank credit-advice letters.
Documents Immigration always asks for
- Kor-Ror 2 (marriage certificate) and Kor-Ror 3 (marriage record extract), both issued within the last 3 months.
- Spouse's Thai ID and tabien baan (house registration book).
- 20+ photos of the couple together at home, with extended family, and on outings — Immigration uses these to assess that the marriage is genuine.
- Map of your registered home address, photos of the front of the house including the house number, and the TM.30 acknowledgement.
- Bank-issued letter and 12 months of passbook updates for the 400,000 THB account.
Renewing without leaving Thailand
File the extension in the 30 days before your current permission to stay expires. Pattaya and Chonburi Immigration will normally issue the extension on the same day, with a 30-day 'under consideration' stamp; the long stamp is added at the follow-up appointment.
Always purchase a re-entry permit (1,000 THB single / 3,800 THB multiple) before any trip abroad. Without one the extension is voided the moment you leave, and you have to start the entire process again.
Working on the marriage visa
The marriage visa itself doesn't authorise work — but it does let you apply for a work permit without the 2 million THB registered-capital and 4 Thai employee requirements that normally apply to a Non-B work permit. This is a substantial saving for spouses joining a Thai-owned business or setting up a small consultancy with a Thai partner.
